The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), in partnership with the Gert Sibande Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, recently visited the hairdressing skills development programme in Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, Mpumalanga. The programme is accredited at NQF Level 3 in Hairdressing by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). It equips learners with practical, hands-on skills in hairdressing, improving their chances of employment and enabling them to start their own businesses upon completion.

Facilitator Mr. Lucas Modishane from Gert Sibande TVET College explained, “Under hairdressing, there are six skill areas, but for this programme, we have chosen head styling, which includes braiding, dreadlocks, and bonding. We hope participants will make good use of the certificates issued by QCTO.” He expressed appreciation for the partnership between EPWP and the college, adding, “This collaboration is truly invaluable. It not only equips participants with practical skills but also empowers them to generate income as they transition out of the programme.”

Mr. Lesley Nthangeni, Assistant Director for the Training Unit at the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) regional office in Mpumalanga, noted that the training forms part of a key priority area in the current phase of the EPWP. This phase focuses on preparing participants for a successful, sustainable exit from the programme, enabling them to open their own businesses upon completion.

One enthusiastic participant, Ms. Nonhlanhla Mahlangu from Mountain View, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “I hope to open my own business when I exit the programme by using the knowledge and skills I have gained.”
